Acrylics but different – 4 techniques with water

07/16/2024 |

Abstract painting is always a wonderful experiment. We are thinning acrylic paint with water to show you four cool effects. SOLO GOYA Triton Acrylic is perfect for this as the artists’ acrylic paint already has a liquid consistency and can be easily mixed with water. We are curious about the play of water and colour – and about the results, which are always amazing. Try it out, here are our four favourite techniques with acrylic paint and water.

Techniqiue 1: Painting with a hairdryer

Water always finds its own way. We use this insight and let paint thinned with water simply wander over the canvas. Here, you can use a hairdryer to steer its direction. For this, we begin by adding SOLO GOYA Triton Acrylic onto a canvas. Then we pour over a little water and mix it with the paint. This works best with a broad paintbrush. Now, switch on the hairdryer and the hot jet of air starts to move the watery paint. Fantastic how you can steer the paint in different directions.

Technique 2: Pouring thinned paint

With this acrylic painting technique, the paint is thinned in a container. We pour a large blob of SOLO GOYA Triton Acrylic into a beaker, pour over a shot of water and mix it all together with a wooden spatula. Is the paint evenly thinned? Then time to put on your canvas. Pour the mix of acrylic paint and water onto your painting surface and let the paint flow. Tilt the stretched canvas gently so that the paint can flow over a large area into a wonderful wash of colour. Tip: if you have poured too much paint onto the canvas, use a dry paint brush or cloth to soak up and remove some of it, to leave a transparent coating of paint.

Technique 3: Pushing around watery paint

The great thing about acrylic paint thinned with water is it takes much longer to dry. And you can take that time to play with it on your canvas. We can change the shape of the poured on paint by pushing the thinned paint around with a paintbrush. You can also use a palette knife or squeegee. It's important here not to change too much, otherwise you get a milky look. That wouldn’t be a real drama. You could paint over the area again with SOLO GOYA Triton Acrylic. There are no boundaries to playing with colour washes and pure colour paint!

Technique 4: Spraying water in wet paint

Fancy an effect that looks like swathes of mist? You can get that with an atomizer or water sprayer! First put some SOLO GOYA Triton Acrylic onto the canvas. Don’t let the acrylic paint dry, but spray water onto the edges of the painted area. The sprayed-on water solubilizes part of the paint, making the thinned colour flow alongside. The effect is like a gentle wisp of colour that visibly softens any hard edges. Try it out and be wowed!
