MUCKI Finger Paint – set of four 150-ml tubs rated "Excellent" by ÖKO-TEST

04/08/2025 |

Hooray, top marks again! The MUCKI Finger Paint – set of four 150-ml tubs (Art. No. 2314) has been tested as part of the ÖKO-TEST Magazine 4/2025 survey, page 114-119, under the headline “Finger Paints Test” and given the rating “Excellent”, and we are thrilled.

The result shows how important consistent quality is to us. In the last test in 2021, we also got an “Excellent” rating (cf. Rudenko, D. & Schuster, F. (2021, September). Farbe im Spiel. ÖKO-TEST guide Kinder & Familie 2021, p. 90-95). Here, we report on the 2025 test and what USP was determined for the MUCKI Finger Paints in the set of 4 tubs.

Skin-friendly preservative and plus points for recyclate content in the tubs

Tested and compared were 18 paint sets from different manufacturers, including the MUCKI Finger Paints in the set of four 150-ml tubs, Art.-No. 2314 (p. Throl, C. & Baier, H. (2025, March). Saubere Schmiererei. ÖKO-TEST Magazin, (4/2025), p. 114-119).

For the testing of the preservatives, the ÖKO-TEST Magazin referenced the current EU standard DIN EN 71.7 for finger paints. This prescribes permissible maximum concentrations of substances. For MUCKI Finger Paint, we use the preservative 2-phenoxyethanol, a substance from the cosmetics industry that is generally skin friendly.
As very young artists might also want to know what the paint tastes like, in the 2025 test, ÖKO-TEST also looked for the addition of bitter substances. We add the bitter substance Bitrex to our finger paint, it contains the best-known and most bitter substance. It makes the finger paint taste very bitter to prevent it being swallowed.

In the current test, ÖKO-TEST raised the bar and asked the manufacturers about other sustainable concepts for their products. The magazine wanted to know whether they had used recyclate in their plastic bottles and tubs. Here, only MUCKI Finger Paint set of four 150-ml paint tubs was able to score plus points. The paint tubs consist of 61 % recycled plastic. All other tested manufacturers were not able to show any recyclate in the product containers (S. Throl, C., & Baier, H. (2025, March). Saubere Schmiererei. ÖKO-TEST Magazin, (4/2025), p. 117). These results shows us that we have taken the right approach. But we won’t rest here and want to continue on the road to greater awareness and responsibility.

High quality standards for manufacturing of the paints

For us, the “Excellent” from ÖKO-TEST is recognition for the high standards that we have set ourselves for MUCKI Finger Paint. Safety and care are our highest priority when we make children’s paint.

We have developed MUCKI Finger Paint to be suitable for children aged from 2 years. We have deliberately left out any substances that are not absolutely necessary. Any raw materials that have been the subject of criticism aren't an option for us. The MUCKI Finger Paint in the set of four 150-ml paint tubs comprises MUCKI Finger Paint in the colours yellow, red, blue and green. For all the colours, we choose not to use parabens. The paints are gluten-free, lactose-free, nut-free and titanium dioxide-free. In addition, they are vegan and have been dermatologically tested. We have a company laboratory that continually tests our children’s paints. We are also arrange for tests to be conducted by independent institutes. That is extra cost and effort for us, but it's worth it. We believe that painting fun for the youngest artists should be safe and reliable.
