Colour of the Month: White

12/07/2023 |

This year, December started off in white. Will that herald a white Christmas? Who knows! This lightest colour immediately puts us in a Christmassy mood. That is why we have chosen white as our colour of the month for December. With our favourite things and Christmas tree ornaments gleaming in white splendour, we are instantly transported to a winter wonderland. We ask what's behind this radiant colour and how best to combine white to get beautiful effects.

Light and clear – a real highlight

We are associate white with purity and freshness. No wonder that washing powder is made to be white. White has the lightest value on the scale of tonal values, drawing everyone's gaze. Especially when it is alongside a dark colour. An effect you can use to highlight certain areas in a painting. If a lot of white is used in furnishings or product design, the colour adds clarity and  gives a feeling of space. Too much white, however, can appear sterile and cool. Perhaps we view a snowscape as particularly splendid which it is framed by a blue sky.

In many variations from bluish to pure white

White is not automatically white. This "colourless" colour can be very varied if you look closely enough. The lighter a colour, the more light is reflected in our eyes, so we can discover more nuances. For example, there is a slightly beige cream white, bluish glacial white, yellowish lunar white and many other white hues. Brilliant white is mostly titanium white, which has been on the market since the early 20th century. Before that, people used lime or bone ash to get white. White forms the basis for lots of pastel shades like pink, lilac or light blue.

For soft shades and as a minimalist balance

At KREUL, you will find white in almost all product lines. Perfect as this means you can create projects with highlights and mix lots more colour shades yourself. After all, you can use white to optimally lighten and soften otherwise bold colours. White is like a blank sheet of paper on which you can get really creative. It looks, clean, soft and gentle. And that’s why it is the perfect balance for intense colours like red or pink.

Together with unsaturated colours like grey or muted brown shades, white appears minimalistic and natural. Like snow covering winter branches. With KREUL Nature Snow Crystal and on pressed leaves and cork, you can create a wintery potpourri that looks simple yet elegant. Next to dark green, white appears like a ray of light. That is why we love white Christmas ornaments hanging on a Christmas tree. A quick way to give a Christmas tree bauble that snowball look, like here with KREUL Acrylic Matt paint in white, red and green.
