On which materials can I use KREUL Magnetic Primer?
KREUL Magnetic Primer is an acrylic primer with an extra special effect. You can use it to paint wood, card, polystyrene, stone, dried concrete and MDF and make surfaces onto which you can stick magnets. The primer also sticks to other surfaces like canvas, fabric, glass, ceramics, tiles or Tetra Pak. The main thing is that the surface is solid and smooth so that the magnets can stick properly to it later.
What’s the best way to apply KREUL Magnetic Primer?
You can apply KREUL Magnetic Primer with a broad, flat paintbrush. You can get a very even finish without visible brushstrokes by using a paint roller. After the paint has completely dried (24 hours), you can easily paint over the surface with acrylic paints without losing any of the magnetic strength. If your surface is very smooth, we recommend lightly sanding the the primer coat before you paint over it. The special primer has a creamy paste-like consistency. But it shouldn’t be thinned down. So spraying KREUL Magnetic Primer isn’t possible.
How many coats do I need to make sure the magnets stick well?
The magnetic strength depends on the thickness of the paint. To make sure the magnets stick properly, we recommend applying several even coats as the magnetic effect gets stronger with every additional coat. You get an optimum magnetic effect by applying at least 3 coats of magnetic primer cross-wise with a paintbrush. If you are using a paint roller, then you need at least 5 coats as the layers of paint are thinner than with a paintbrush. Let each coat of paint dry for around 2 hours before applying the next one on top.
Can I use KREUL Magnetic Primer outdoors?
The primer has been developed for use indoors. If you want to use it outdoors, then you will have to protect it with a waterproof varnish, e.g. KREUL Transparent Synthetic-Resin-Based Protective Varnish, KREUL Protective Varnish, KREUL Matt, Gloss or Metallic Acrylic Paints or KREUL Chalky Paint.
How strong is the magnetic strength compared to metal surfaces?
The finish you get with magnetic primer is not the same as a sheet of metal – the adhesive force is weaker. It is good enough for notes, lightweight magnets or small decorative items. It is not suitable for heavy objects. We also recommend using special magnets, particularly neodymium magnets. You can identify these from their steel surface finish and they are made from the strongest magnetic material.
