In August, we yearn for a colour that lets us gaze into the faraway. The horizon on a bright and sunny day, far-off coastal landscapes and the infinite expanse of the ocean are blue. Not just any blue, but an intensive, impactful colour hue. That is why we have chosen primary blue as our colour of the month for August. An essential shade of blue to highlight the beauty of summer in vibrant colour. We reveal what primary blue means and the versatile ways in which you can use this colour.

 ### What is primary blue?

Primary means “in first place”, and with regard to primary blue, this refers to its position in the colour wheel. Blue is a basic colour and therefore a primary colour. You can’t mix it yourself from other colours. But you can add red or yellow to change the look of primary blue. The result is mixed secondary colours. Add a bit of red to get a violet shade of blue, or add yellow to change the blue into a greenish blue. Primary blue is therefore a fantastic basic colour if you want to limit your colour selection to just a few shades. The cool, but strong blue is a need-to-have colour in any starter palette for painting and creative projects. It has high saturation and is perfect for mixing light and dark blues.

 ### Bold contrast with orange and glitter to make you smile

Primary blue is a cool shade of blue. You can see that especially if you mix in a bit of white. While warm blue shades like ultramarine then tend towards a pale violet, with primary blue this mix gives a refreshing light blue. Perfect for painting bright blue skies. The complementary colour to primary blue is a vibrant orange. Next to each other, the two colours show an eye-catchingly bold contrast. But you can also use orange in other ways. You can add a little orange to tone down the very flashy primary blue and get a more subtle shade. What else that goes with a project in intense blue? We think a splatter of glitter, for instance with the KREUL Glitter Pen in blue, gives an extra kick and brings a smile to our face.
